The Toyota Prius, developed and built by the Toyota Motor Corporation, is a hybrid electric mid-sized car first went on sale in Japan in 1997. It is the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. The Toyota Prius was subsequently introduced worldwide in 2001 and sold in more than 40 countries and regions. The largest markets are in Japan and North America with more than 1.2 million sold worldwide by early 2009. In 2007, the United States Environmental Protection Agency stated that Toyota Prius is the most fuel efficient car sold in the US. Based on non-CO2 emissions, the EPA and California Air Resources Board also rate the Toyota Prius as among the cleanest vehicle sold in the United States. In the UK, the UK Department for Transport stated that Toyota Prius is tied as the sixth least CO2-emitting vehicle sold in the UK.
