The BMW M GmbH established in May 1972 with just eight employees. By 1988, it already had 400 employees. The BMW M GmbH is a subsidiary of German car manufacturer BMW AG. It was initially created to facilitate BMW successful racing program in the 1960s and 1970s. The “M” stands for Motorsport, or also known as M-Technik. The McLAren F1 powered by the 6.1-liter V-12 engine supplied by BMW M. Like its engine supplier and manufacturer, this engine has enjoyed plenty of racing success, famously winning the first year of competition for the GTR racing variant, the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.
